Most moving checklists are just a flat list of tasks with no sense of when to actually do each one. The timing matters as much as the task itself — booking movers the week before you move is a very different situation from booking them a month out, and a checklist that doesn't distinguish those two moments isn't that useful.

4-6 weeks before

  • Research and book movers or a truck rental if needed — this window matters most during popular moving periods (weekends, month-end, summer), when availability tightens fast
  • Start using up food that won't survive the move (freezer and pantry items)
  • Begin decluttering — it's much easier to sort and donate before boxes are involved than after

2-3 weeks before

  • Submit a formal change-of-address
  • Schedule utility disconnection at the old place and activation at the new one, timed to overlap by a day rather than leave a gap
  • Start collecting boxes and packing materials, and begin packing anything not used daily

1 week before

  • Confirm move logistics (time, access, parking) with movers or helpers
  • Pack a clearly labeled "first night" box — toiletries, a change of clothes, basic kitchen items, chargers — so the essentials aren't buried in a stack of identical boxes
  • Do a final walkthrough plan for the old place if a deposit inspection is involved

Move-in day

  • Photograph the new place's condition immediately, before unpacking — the same reasoning as in First Apartment Checklist (Free Printable)
  • Locate breaker panel, water shutoff, and check smoke detectors before anything else
  • Unpack the "first night" box first, and resist the urge to fully unpack everything at once

After move-in

Give yourself real time to settle rather than expecting the space to be fully organized within the first weekend — see Small Studio Apartment Organization Ideas That Actually Work for a zone-based approach that works better tackled gradually than all at once.
